Despite its popularity in the United States, the drive-in cinema never really got past first gear in Spain. The ‘Autocine of Gijón’ is the only one of its kind in all of northern Spain and one of the only 4 that still remain in operation throughout the country.
August,1993. The Autocine Gijón opens its doors with the intention of staying open only during the summers. But its huge success transformed the initial plan and it was never closed. Currently, the drive-in cinema opens every day except Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve and the 14th of August, due to local bank holiday. These days, though, the facilities are perfectly modern: first-run movies are shown across the big screen (in Spanish language), visitors tune into the sound via their car radios, and sloped parking ensures everyone has a view.
There’s just something awesomely nostalgic and magical about Drive-in movie theaters. Just the idea of watching your favourite movie under the sky full of stars in an open-air cinema and taking a breath of fresh air at the same time is more than alluring. Drive-cinema is more than just a theatre, it gives you a superior cinema experience along with high-quality sound with superb settings under the stars.
It’s affordable and a great place to bring the family for an evening of entertainment.
It’s not only cine. Once inside the drive-in, you can find multiple food options for dinner. From sandwiches to mixed dishes, passing through hamburgers, chips, popcorn and all kinds of sweets and soft drinks … Food that you can consume in your own car or if you prefer, also, in the bar terraces.
And if you don’t have a car, don’t worry. You still can enjoy a good film at the Gijón’s drive cinema. You can reach the place by bus (Lines 25 or 18) and then use the public facilities to watch the film.
